Description
Enfilade is a 300m2 office renovation for a metal manufacturing company headquarters in Rotterdam. Following a decade-long restructuring from a traditional hierarchy to an open company culture, the company wished to revitalise and reorganise their office space to encourage employees to work together in order to explore and maximise possibilities.
An enfilade is a spatial typology in which a series of equally-proportioned rooms run parallel to each other. The redesign incorporates this spatial organisation in its revisioning of the expansive floor space to remove the hierarchy of spaces, and ensure physical openness and transparency in the plan. There are neither corridors, doors, nor internal glass partitions, but rather a semi-enclosed room structure. These spaces are acoustically reinforced to facilitate focused work within this open, yet structured plan.
Each room reflects the same properties in material and dimension, with neutral, sober qualities, such as white office furniture, and white stucco walls, with black plinths. A carpet underfoot in the workspaces unobtrusively demarcates individual, but connected space.
Although all work areas are punctuated by the same carpet feature, the entrance space is an exception, with a discrete linoleum floor covering. A reception desk clad in mirrors further reinforces this focal point, welcoming guests into the heart of the metal manufacturing company’s operation.
